Dr. Lawrence Alexander “Larry” Butler Obituary Ottawa Death: The veterinary and equine communities are mourning the loss of Dr. Lawrence Alexander Butler (Larry), who passed away on May 20, 2026, at the age of 75 after a courageous battle with ALS, surrounded by his loving family. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary life defined by compassion, expertise, and unwavering dedication to animals and the people who loved them.

Born on October 3, 1950, in New Liskeard, Ontario, Larry developed an early passion for animals, farming, and sports. He pursued his calling at the University of Guelph, graduating in Veterinary Medicine in 1974, and later advanced his surgical training at Cornell University. His lifelong commitment to learning made him one of the most respected large animal veterinarians in the Ottawa Valley.

Larry was known not only for his professional excellence but also for his calm presence, sharp intuition, and extraordinary ability to work with horses others found difficult. Clients often described him as a vet who could be trusted in any situation, at any hour.

Beyond his profession, Larry was a devoted horseman, breeding and racing standardbreds across Ontario and New York. At home, he was a loving father to Jeffrey Butler (Leeanne) and Andrew Butler (Jacqueline), and a proud grandfather to Ethan, Devon, Grayson, and Maeve. He is also survived by his sisters Karen Bruens and Jill Butler, along with extended family and friends who deeply valued his humor and loyalty.

A celebration of life and funeral arrangements (obituary 2026) will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 2:00–5:00 PM at Thee Farm, 4100 County Rd 43, Kemptville, ON, with a eulogy at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society or a charity of choice. Larry’s legacy of compassion, skill, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him.
